You’ll definitely want to be on hand for this special night! Your whooping and hollering is just what the director ordered!

Bluegrass Unlimited magazine writes: “…delightfully unadorned 1950s-style bluegrass that draws heavily on, yet doesn’t

2017 Jamboree Workshop Descriptions

12:30 to 1:40 PM
Fixing Instruments — Room #124 Brooklyn Lutherie
Learn about the care and maintenance of your beloved instruments.

Young Banjo Players Workshop – Room #116 (children <12 must have adult present) Nora Brown
12-year old Nora Brown will teach an old-time song and perform it on a variety of
banjos including ukulele, banjeaurine, 5 string banjo and fretless banjo. She will
discuss what makes each instrument special and how it’s used in old-time playing.
This workshop is especially suited for young persons who’ve had a few lessons.

How to Backup Songs with the Fiddle — Room #118 Bill Christophersen
We’ll look at what a fiddler can do — particularly with double stops and judiciously
placed licks — to enhance old-time, country, and bluegrass songs.

Songwriting — Room #126 Vincent Cross
Collectors, poets and songwriters have been altering traditional sources for
contemporary audiences for centuries, notably Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie.
Expect a performance and discussion on songwriting from traditional sources and
traditional styles of instrumentation on acoustic guitar and banjo.

1:50 to 3:00 PM
Fixing Instruments — Room #124 Brooklyn Lutherie
Learn about the care and maintenance of your beloved instruments.

Old Time Banjo I — Room #116 Lydia Sylvia Martin
Provides an introduction to old-time banjo styles. Lydia will teach frailing basics as
well as old-time up-picking and fingerpicking. If you’re ready to dive into the world of
Old Time Banjo, this is the workshop for you.

Harmonica — Room #118 Trip Henderson
Designed for beginning to intermediate players. Provides an overview of
harmonica types, familiarization with and playing the diatonic harmonica
(position, key, mode, chords, melodies, technique and tone). Participants
must bring an “A” harmonica.

Harmony Singing — Room #126 Gene Yellin
Hands on, experiential for beginning singers and beyond. We will use three
songs and all will be singing parts above and below the lead voice. Harmony
basics will be explained and demonstrated.

3:15 to 4:15 PM — Special Presentation in the North Garden (parent/guardian must be present) Lloyd H. Miller
Lloyd Miller is the founder and frontman of the critically-acclaimed educational band, “Deedle Deedle
Dees” and co-writer of the multi-media stage musical “Trashed Out.” Lloyd will be leading a highly
interactive sing-a-long concert for the whole family culminating in a mini-songwriting workshop. Bring
your instruments to play along during the finale featuring a song written by your group!
